Someone slides a tangle of chains across the counter. You've got a scale, a loupe and about thirty seconds before they expect a number. A calculator app turns grams and karats into melt value and an offer, as long as its spot price is live and its karat math is right.

The good news: there are solid free options. The difference is what happens after the number: whether the app saves the deal, prints a receipt, or tracks what you made when the lot comes back from the refinery.

How we compared: we read each app's App Store page, Google Play page and website on October 19, 2026. Features are as each developer describes them, and prices and ratings change. Nu Stack is our app.

What Every Scrap Calculator Should Do

  • Live spot price. A stale price is the most expensive bug in the business.
  • Every karat. 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K and 24K at minimum; 8K and 9K for European pieces; ideally a custom purity for XRF readings.
  • Grams, pennyweight and troy ounces. You'll see all three. One dwt is 1.55517 g.
  • A buy rate. The percentage of melt you'll pay, so the offer shows next to the melt value.

Here's the math any app should match. 14K is 58.33% gold, so:

Piece Melt value at $4,147/oz Offer at 80%
1 g of 14K $77.78 $62.22
10 g of 14K chain $777.78 $622.23
10 g of 10K $555.64 $444.51
10 g of 18K $1,000 $800.05

If an app's number is far off from this table, check its spot price and purity settings before you trust it.

Best for: buyers who trust Kitco pricing and need several currencies.

Melt Value Calculator

A newer app covering gold, silver, platinum and palladium with purity presets, custom purity and a dealer payout estimator. It says it uses current futures prices rather than spot.

  • Platforms and price: iPhone and Android, free with in-app purchases (weekly $0.99, monthly $2.99, yearly $4.99 or lifetime $12.99 on iOS).
  • Rating (Oct 19, 2026): 4.9 from 185 on iOS.

Best for: a modern, simple melt calculator if you don't mind a subscription for the extras.

PCGS Coinflation

From the Professional Coin Grading Service: four calculators for U.S. silver coins, base-metal coins, gold scrap and silver scrap, with gold and silver prices updated every minute.

  • Platforms and price: free on iPhone and Android.
  • Ratings (Oct 19, 2026): 3.6 from 88 on iOS (last updated 2020); 1.9 from 515 reviews and 100K+ downloads on Google Play.

Best for: junk silver and U.S. coin melt values alongside scrap. For coin-by-coin specs, see our coin melt values too.

Stack Heavy

A free toolkit for iPhone and Android ("no paywalls, no subscriptions") with spot prices for five metals, daily dealer-premium comparisons and junk silver, scrap gold and premium-over-spot calculators. 5.0 from 15 on iOS (Oct 19, 2026).

Best for: stackers who want free calculators and premium comparisons in one place.

Karat Kalculator

From Mid-States Recycling, a refiner: enter weights per karat and get an estimated net value for a refining lot after charges. Free on iPhone (2.7 from 7 ratings, Oct 19, 2026), and its listing points to a web version.

Best for: estimating what a refining lot nets after the refiner's charges.

Nu Stack

Nu Stack (nustack.app) is a web app, so the same calculator and data work on a phone at the counter and a laptop at home. The calculator covers gold 8K–24K and silver .800–.999, an XRF purity override, buy rate, margin, refinery payout and a deal gauge, at live spot. You can also say "Hey Stack, 5 grams 14k" to fill a row by voice. A free version runs without an account.

What sets it apart is what happens after the quote:

  • Saved purchases with cost basis, status and profit by source and metal (Basic and up).
  • PDF receipts with the seller's signature and photos; your business name and logo from Stacker.
  • Refinery lots and Sell / Ship tracking, plus the Treasure Hunter Chrome extension (Pro) that scores Marketplace, Craigslist, eBay and Whatnot listings by melt value as you browse.
  • Business tools (Business plan) for shops: seller ID records, hold periods and QuickBooks export.
  • Price: Free (calculator and live prices; no saving), Basic $1.99, Stacker $4.99, Pro $9.99, Business $39 a month, with a 14-day Pro trial.

Trade-offs: no App Store or Google Play app today, and it's gold and silver only (no platinum).

Best for: buyers who do this every week and want the quote, the receipt and the profit in one place.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free scrap gold calculator app?

Scrap Gold Pro is free on iPhone (no in-app purchases or ads are flagged on its Android listing) and is built for pawn shops and jewelers. ScrapIt! by Kitco is free on iPhone, and Stack Heavy is free on both platforms. Nu Stack's calculator is free in the browser, with a no-sign-up version at nustack.app/tools/scrap-gold-calculator/.

How do scrap gold calculators work out melt value?

Melt value = weight in grams × purity × spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035. 14K is 58.33% gold, so at today's $4,147/oz a gram of 14K is worth about $77.78 in metal. A buy rate (say 80%) then gives your offer.

Which calculator app is best for a pawn shop?

Scrap Gold Pro describes itself as built for pawn shops and jewelers and copies customer quotes with your shop details. If you also want saved purchases, signed receipts, seller records and reports, Nu Stack's Business plan adds those.

Do these apps use live gold prices?

Scrap Gold Pro, ScrapIt!, Coinflation and Nu Stack list live or regularly updated prices; Melt Value Calculator says it uses current futures prices. Check the spot shown in any app against a live source before quoting a big lot.

Does Nu Stack have an iPhone or Android app?

Nu Stack is a web app. It runs in any browser on iPhone, Android and desktop and can be added to your home screen; it isn't in the App Store or Google Play today.
