Nu Stack vs GoldFolio: Which Precious Metals App Is Right for You?

If you're searching for a precious metals app, you've probably come across GoldFolio and Nu Stack. Both deal with gold and silver. Both have free tiers. Both look like they might solve the same problem. But once you dig into what each one actually does, they serve different types of users.

This isn't a takedown of either app. Both are actively developed. The question is which one fits the way you deal with precious metals, and the answer mostly depends on whether you're a holder or a buyer.

We checked GoldFolio's App Store and Google Play listings, its website and its changelog on October 19, 2026. Its features are as its developer describes them. Nu Stack is our app.

What GoldFolio Does

GoldFolio (goldfolio.app) is a portfolio tracker for physical precious metals, made by LKLK s.r.o. It's a native app on iPhone and Android, built to track the value of what you own.

You add your holdings (quantity, weight, type, a photo and the price you paid) across gold, silver, platinum, palladium and copper. GoldFolio values them at live spot, shows total value and profit or loss, and lets you organize by metal, type or your own categories. It has home-screen widgets, price history from one day to five years, CSV and Excel import, CSV export, and no ads. Apple's privacy label for it reads "Data Not Collected".

It's free, with Pro at $3.99 a month or $33.49 a year on the App Store. Its April 2026 update moved bulk upload, export and a few other tools into Premium, and its release notes say the free version "remains fully functional" for everyday use. As of October 19, 2026 it had 4.1 stars from 33 ratings on iOS and 4.2 from 121 reviews (10K+ downloads) on Google Play.

Where GoldFolio focuses: tracking what you already have. If you buy occasionally and want a clean total and allocation, it does that job.

What Nu Stack Does

Nu Stack (nustack.app) is built for people who buy, evaluate and sell precious metals, not just hold them. It started as a scrap gold calculator and grew into a workflow tool for buyers, stackers, pawn shops and dealers.

The core is the Calculator: multi-karat gold (8K through 24K) and silver grades (.800 through .999), an XRF purity override, buy rate, margin, refinery payout and a Deal Gauge that scores the deal, at live spot. At today's $4,147/oz, a gram of 14K is about $77.78 in melt. The calculator, live prices and coin database lookup are free, and there's a no-sign-up version.

Saving starts with the Basic plan ($1.99 a month): holdings with cost basis (fees, shipping and insurance), Coin Portfolio, purchase receipts with signature and photos, CSV export, one email price alert and three AI Coin ID scans a month. Stacker ($4.99) adds unlimited items, bulk import, tax export, branded receipts, 10 alerts and Market Updates. Pro ($9.99) adds the Treasure Hunter Chrome extension, which scores Facebook Marketplace, Facebook Groups, eBay, Craigslist and Whatnot listings by melt value as you browse, plus unlimited alerts. Business ($39) adds seller ID records, hold periods and QuickBooks export for shops. New accounts start with a 14-day Pro trial. Every plan also gets Find Shops (Google Maps searches for coin, pawn, jewelry and thrift shops near you).

Nu Stack is a web app. It runs in your browser on any device and installs to your home screen, with your data synced across phone, tablet and laptop. It isn't in the App Store or Google Play today.

The Key Difference

GoldFolio answers: "What is my collection worth right now?"

Nu Stack answers: "Should I buy this? What's my margin? How does this deal compare to my last ten? Where's my profit coming from?"

They look like competitors on the surface, but they're solving different problems for different users.

Where GoldFolio Wins

Native apps. GoldFolio is in the App Store and Google Play, with widgets. If you prefer installing from a store, that's a point in its favor.

More metals. GoldFolio tracks platinum, palladium and copper as well as gold and silver. If you hold those, it covers more ground.

Simplicity and privacy. It's a focused holdings tracker with no ads, and its App Store privacy label says "Data Not Collected". Nu Stack needs an account to sync your data.

Where Nu Stack Wins

Active buying workflow. If you're evaluating scrap deals in the field, the calculator with buy rate, margin, Deal Gauge and signed receipts is built for that. GoldFolio's listings don't describe a scrap calculator; it isn't what it's designed for.

Marketplace listing scoring. As you browse Facebook Marketplace, Facebook Groups, eBay, Craigslist and Whatnot, the Treasure Hunter Chrome extension reads precious metals listings and overlays a melt-value badge. We haven't found another precious metals app that does this.

Business tools. Seller records, profit by source, refinery lots and Sell / Ship tracking, plus seller ID records, hold periods and QuickBooks export on the Business plan. These are tools for someone running a buying operation.

Any device. Nu Stack works the same on a phone, a tablet and a Windows or Mac computer, with one account and real-time sync.

Alerts and market data. Email price alerts, and Market Updates that show moving averages, RSI and MACD for gold and silver. They describe the data; they aren't buy or sell signals.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose GoldFolio if you're a buy-and-hold investor who acquires gold and silver occasionally and wants a clean, simple way to see what your collection is worth. You're not doing weekly scrap buys or running margins — you want a portfolio view.

Choose Nu Stack if you're actively buying and selling — scrap gold, coins, bullion, or a mix. You need to calculate deals fast, track your inventory and profit, and want everything in one tool instead of juggling a calculator, a spreadsheet, and a notes app. Especially if you're buying from multiple sources like pawn shops, Facebook Marketplace, and estate sales.

GoldFolio and Nu Stack aren't really direct competitors — they serve different segments of the precious metals community. GoldFolio is a portfolio tracker for holders. Nu Stack is a buying platform for active participants. The right choice is the one that matches how you actually interact with precious metals.
