Gold rate calculator with making charges and GST
Jewellery price = gold value + making charges + 3% GST, where gold value = weight × rate per gram. For 10 g of 22K at ₹10,996/g (international spot) with 12% making charges, that's ₹1,09,962 + ₹13,195 + 3% GST = about ₹1,26,852.
Pre-filled with the international spot value for this purity. Type your jeweller's rate for an exact bill.
How to use it
- Weight: the net gold weight in grams (without stones, if the bill lists them separately).
- Purity: 22K (916) for most jewellery, 24K for coins and bars.
- Gold rate per gram: we fill in the international spot value for that purity. For a real bill, type your jeweller's rate for that purity; it is usually higher.
- Making charges: as a percentage of the gold value, or a fixed amount per gram, or a flat amount, whichever your jeweller uses.
- GST: 3% on gold value plus making charges is the usual rate for jewellery.
How a jewellery bill is worked out
| Line | How it's calculated |
|---|---|
| Gold value | weight (g) × rate per gram for that purity |
| Making charges | % of gold value, or ₹ per gram × weight, or flat |
| Stone charges | added separately, if any |
| GST | 3% of (gold value + making charges + stones) |
| Total | sum of the above |
Tips
- Ask for the making charge as a number. "12% making" on a 22K chain changes the bill by thousands of rupees; compare it between shops.
- Check the hallmark and HUID before you pay: see 916 gold meaning.
- Old gold exchange: the shop values your old gold by weight × purity × its buying rate, often minus a small deduction. The making charges you paid before are not refunded.
Frequently asked questions
How is the price of gold jewellery calculated?
Price = gold value (weight × rate per gram) + making charges + stone charges, plus 3% GST on the total of those.
What are normal making charges for gold jewellery?
They vary widely by design and shop, from a few percent for simple chains and coins to much more for intricate work. Always ask for the figure and compare.
Is GST charged on making charges?
When you buy jewellery from a jeweller, 3% GST applies to the whole value of the jewellery, which includes the making charges. If you give your own gold to a goldsmith and pay only for the work (job work), that labour charge is taxed separately at a different rate.
Why does the calculator's rate differ from my jeweller's?
We fill in the international spot value converted to rupees. Indian retail rates include import duty and local premiums, so type your jeweller's rate for an exact bill.
