How the number is calculated
Gold trades worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 g). So:
value per gram = (spot price per ounce ÷ 31.1035) × USD-INR rate × purity
For 22K the purity is 0.916. That gives ₹10,996 per gram today.
Why your jeweller's 22K rate is higher
The "today's rate" board at a jewellery shop, or a city rate in the newspaper, is a retail rate inside India. It usually sits above the international price converted to rupees because it includes:
- Import duty on gold brought into India, which the government sets and changes from time to time.
- Local premiums or discounts set by bullion dealers and jewellers' associations in each city.
When you buy jewellery, the bill then adds making charges (often a percentage of the gold value or a fixed amount per gram) and 3% GST. You can work out a full bill with the gold rate calculator.
So use this page to understand the base value and to compare rates, not as the price a shop must charge. We don't publish city rates because we don't collect them.
When you sell or exchange old gold
Buyers start from the gold content: weight × purity × rate. Many jewellers deduct a few percent for melting losses and testing, and stones are not paid as gold. Knowing the base value helps you judge the offer.
