Hermon A. MacNeil's design, struck 1916–1930 (no quarters are dated 1922). The date sits on a raised step and often wore away in circulation, which is why many survivors are dateless.
How to identify a Standing Liberty Quarter
- The mint mark (D or S) is on the obverse, left of the date, at the top of the step.
- Type 1 (1916–1917) shows Liberty uncovered; Type 2 (1917–1930) adds chain mail and moves the eagle's stars.
- From 1925 the date was recessed into the step so it would stop wearing off.
How the melt value is calculated
Melt value = gross weight × fineness ÷ 31.1035 × spot price. For the Standing Liberty Quarter: 6.25 g × .900 = 5.625 g of pure silver. Divide by 31.1035 grams per troy ounce to get 0.1808 oz, then multiply by $57.35 spot: about $10.37.

Melt value vs collector value
Melt value is only what the silver in a Standing Liberty Quarter is worth at today's spot price. A coin's market value can be much higher: scarce dates, mint marks and high grades sell to collectors for a premium, while common dates in worn condition trade closer to melt. Nu Stack does not estimate collector prices on this page. For a specific coin, check the date and mint mark, the condition (a grading service such as PCGS or NGC, or a local dealer) and recent sales.
