Designed by George T. Morgan and struck from 1878 to 1904, then again in 1921, at Philadelphia (no mint mark), New Orleans (O), San Francisco (S), Carson City (CC) and, in 1921 only, Denver (D). The mint mark is on the reverse, below the wreath.
How to identify a Morgan Silver Dollar
- The mint mark (O, S, CC or D) is on the reverse, below the wreath and above the "DO" of DOLLAR. No mint mark means Philadelphia.
- No Morgans were dated 1905–1920; the series ends in 1904 and returns for one year in 1921.
- Collectors watch Carson City (CC) dates and low-mintage dates such as the 1893-S; the 1895 Philadelphia coin was issued only as a proof.
How the melt value is calculated
Melt value = gross weight × fineness ÷ 31.1035 × spot price. For the Morgan Silver Dollar: 26.73 g × .900 = 24.06 g of pure silver. Divide by 31.1035 grams per troy ounce to get 0.7734 oz, then multiply by $57.35 spot: about $44.36.

Melt value vs collector value
Melt value is only what the silver in a Morgan Silver Dollar is worth at today's spot price. A coin's market value can be much higher: scarce dates, mint marks and high grades sell to collectors for a premium, while common dates in worn condition trade closer to melt. Nu Stack does not estimate collector prices on this page. For a specific coin, check the date and mint mark, the condition (a grading service such as PCGS or NGC, or a local dealer) and recent sales.
